Camperdown at a glance
Situated just outside the eThekwini Municipality city limits, approximately 40km from the Durban Port and 35km from Pietermaritzburg, in the heart of Durban's Outer West on the N3 Durban/JHB corridor lies the older industrial suburb of Hammarsdale. The area has seen great change over time as it's now home to many businesses that offer employment opportunities to locals. There are two components, the new developments just up from the N3 interchange and the revitalised older portion which was previously home to many large textile companies. The logistics and industrial properties in the older portion have been renovated to include new features that make them more attractive to potential tenants. These sites now boast enhanced features that appeal to businesses, furthering economic development in the area.
Hammarsdale has reasonably priced properties to lease and also a large semi-skilled labour force which makes it an ideal spot for businesses to start off. The fact that electricity is supplied directly from Eskom is an added benefit. Keystone Industrial Park is a modern, brand new secure logistics park bordering the N3. The 1 million square metres of land has been platformed and is highly visible from the N3. Mr Price Group, SAFAL Steel, Boxer, Ackermans and Value group have chosen the Durban Outer West as their location of choice. Electricity in this node is far cheaper than elsewhere as it is purchased directly from Eskom.
History
Hammarsdale is derived from Zulu, which means 'sunrise', 'the sun comes out'. Locals describe the area as a vibrant place with the potential to become one of the best townships in the country. With further assistance from the Municipality, Hammarsdale could establish itself as a regional economic, employment and tourism hub. The new mall has also provided job opportunities for locals. Hammarsdale is destined to be a tourism destination.
